Hon. Roland Gabriel speaking to the press. |
The Igbo people of Nigeria must stand up and fight for their rights and stop this games they are playing in the name of politics.
While many Igbo people claim to be major partakers in the founding of the major parties in Nigeria, we really have little stake in them and can hardly make any defining decisions.
We must realise that we have a problem and that problem is that we are oppressed and we are silent about it and some have even accepted that it is the normal way of things.
The challenge we have is that many of our brothers and sisters have offered themselves up as willing tools for our oppression for selfish interests.
We must look at ourselves as a people and ask questions. Why are we here? How did we get here? Where are we going? How do we get there? A wise man once said, "if you want to know the answer, you have to ask questions." That is true.
How do we think it is normal that after over 50 years of independence, if I want to leave this country, I must go to Lagos or Abuja? How is it normal that to get a substantial Federal job, you must go to Lagos or Abuja? How is it normal that for my goods to get to me in Imo State it has to go through Lagos?
These are some questions and many more that are begging for answers and until we answer them satisfactorily, we cannot make any serious progress as a people.
I was opportuned to be added to a platform that calls itself "Agitation for Oduduwa Republic" and if you see the amount of bile against igbos by different members of the group, you will realise that we need a serious change of approach.
How can we continue hating ourselves when we are hated by all the people that should join us as partners in progress? We need to start making effort to change the narrative everywhere we find ourselves.
We need to our Leaders to start fighting for our interest and asking that things be done.
If we are truly partners in this Nigerian project then we must be seen as partners and not as parasites.
The time for rhetoric is over and the time for action is now. Our people must start calling a spade a spade not a farm implement.
